Kubutu I've been to Lake Kutubu twice, back in the 1980's, once with Gerald Allen. But today this dream lake of a biotope is an unholy disaster due to oil and gas findings. Recently most of its endemic species died - poisoned. But fortunately the blue rainbowfish, Melanotaenia lacustris is safely established in aquariums worldwide. It was quite an adventures! Living and eating with the local people and bringing them out alive after 80 km walk, then flying to the city in a Missionary charter plane. Lake Framu This is Lake Framu, again part of the Ayamaru lakes. There is Melanotaenia boesemani here, but in small numbers. There also seem to be no large individuals. This particular lake is directly connected to Ayamaru, and because of this the invasive species live here too. Large schools of climbing perch, waiting below dart up to feed on the rainbows. In turn a few large snakeheads swim around the school of climbing perch. - Charles Nakamura
