First collected in 1996 by Eng Chua and Adrian Dawson in Wallaby Creek, a tributary of the Annan River south of Cooktown, Cape York Peninsula, north Queensland. Its body shape and unpaired fins much like Melanotaenia trifasciata, the Banded or Regal Rainbowfish, but it does not display the bright nape band when courting, so typical for 'trifasciata'. Gunther Schmida, 2020 Wonga Creek Collected in 1996 in Wonga Creek, Gove Peninsula, Arnhem Land, NT, Australia and photographed a little later courtesy of Bruce Hansen and team, it is one of the most spectacular forms of Regal (Banded) Rainbowfish, Melanotaenia trifasciata from that part of the world and may well turn out to be a yet undescribed species.
