I've been searching for the real history of the development of the first lyretail swordtails by Oren Adams in Florida and I finally found it in the April, 1973 issue of the Florida Fish Farmers' Association magazine - The Trader. Not as complete as I'd like but the first detailed information. Seems the single mutation appeared in 1960 (latest early 1961) and numbers were such that it could be released by 1965. This means the lyretail mutation only appeared 2-3 years after the first Simpson hi fin mutation appeared - 1958.

Here's the passage:

"In 1965 Oren Adams achieved nationwide fame when the 'Adam's Lyretail Swordtail,' developed by himself, appeared on the cover of 'Tropical Fish Hobbyist'. "The colorful species, Mr. Adams reports, took nearly 5 years of breeding before one was sold." Adams further recalls that the first shipment consisted of over 7000 and were sold to one account in New York at about one dollar each [1965 dollars]." - Robert Ellerman
