Classification of the genus Nothobranchius. Nikita Savyolov.
Posted on Thu, 16/09/2010 - 21:53 by Никита Савёлов
About a year ago, I regretfully noticed that according to Russian-language Internet resources, for a few years there have been wanderings of the classification of the roving carp-teeth of 1999 and 2000. Since 2000, more than 10 new species of the genus Notobranchous have been described. A number of species have been rewritten. And although the site has a forum thread with information about the description of new species of carp-toots, but systematic coverage of the modern classification of the genus Notobranchius is absent. Realizing all the impossibility of the task, I decided to try. Smile
N.sp.TSTS 10-05
The author expresses his deep gratitude to Sergey Torgashev for providing the photograph.
In the first lines, I would like to note that a number of notorhanthos are divided by a number of researchers into five subgenera, and I will follow this tradition. It is common to divide subgenera into groups consisting of closely related and not very species.
Below is a list of valid species of the genus Notobranchius. Species within a group or subgenus are arranged in the order of description, which facilitates the search for species described after 2000. In the list of references there are references to descriptions of new species.

In the article describing Nothobranchius oestergaardi (Valdesalici S. and G. Amato, 2011), the authors provide an algorithm for determining the species they include in the N. taeniopygus group. It seemed to me somewhat irrational due to the presence of overlapping signs. Below, I tried to write my own algorithm, also based on the peculiarities of the coloration of living males.
Algorithm for the identification of species of the group N. taeniopygus :
La. Black edging of scales ........................................ Nothobranchius taeniopygus
1b. Red edging of scales ....................................... 2
2a. Caudal fin completely covered with spots .......... Nothobranchius malaissei
2b. The caudal fin contains a subdistal band or a light blue edge or is evenly colored red. ............ 3
3a. Caudal fin with light blue edge ............ 4
3b. Caudal fin with light blue or orange subdistal band or evenly reddish ............ 6
4a. Anal fin with a red margin ......................... Nothobranchius rosenstocki
4b. Anal fin with light blue edge ............. 5
5a. The light blue edge occupies the entire lower part of the anal fin ........................................ ......................................... Nothobranchius symoensi
5 B. The light blue edge of the anal fin is reduced to a light triangle in the lower corner ..................................... .................................................... Nothobranchius brieni
6a. Caudal fin in the middle of the yellow ..................... Nothobranchius hassoni
6b. Caudal fin (in the middle not yellow) .............. 7
7a. Dorsal fin with light blue subdistal band .. Nothobranchius rubroreticulatus
7b. Dorsal fin with light blue edge ............... Nothobranchius polli
7c. The dorsal fin does not contain striae ........................ 8
8a. Anal fin completely covered with spots ............ Nothobranchius boklundi
8b. Anal fin with orange, cream or light blue subdistal band ...................................... ............................................ 9
9a. Caudal fin with black margin .......................... Nothobranchius kafuensis
9b. Caudal fin with a red-brown margin ......... Nothobranchius oestergardi

N. fuscotaeniatus , of course, exists. I just missed it. I am happy to correct this mistake.
N. sp. Lake Victoria, as well as the one placed in the brackets of N. kuhntae , which was rewritten as N. orthonotus (with which, however, still not everyone agrees) are placed here only to stimulate discussion on the taxonomy of notobranchies. I knew that you would react to these 'jambs', so I posted this post when you were with Streltsov in the Czech Republic. The most insulting is that if there is a working group on Notobranchies in the SKLIK, within a week nobody has reacted to all this! And this despite the fact that at least N. kuhntae and N. orthonotus are in SKLIKOVtsev and some thought about their kinship. N. fuscotaeniatus the same is (at least, was before the heat). Maybe I'm not right, but this situation in the professional community horrifies me.

I support Sergei with this proposal! Nikita take on the r. Group. No one to her does not touch! And very offensive. : DONT_KNOW: Maxim, as far as possible, tries to update something there. But to him alone for the whole site does not break.
I would like a closer dialogue on notobrancham. Many of them because of the heat have lost some species (I'm no exception). I would like to know who has what, who can share. Constantly there are new species. We need a joint effort to fix these species. And then we will only look at the fish in the pictures. In general, there is no end of work Smile !!
Come on, Nikita, make up your mind and get on with it! And we all will help you, in this help! : HAPPY:

And to the topic of spec. I think it's worth to add a group with an undefined status and transfer them to the right group as they are identified. In my interesting.
Although on the other hand the list will be large, because populations in some species of Pts. a lot of. But I still think it's interesting to list all the famous specialists.

In connection with the publication of a remarkable article by Kostya Shidlovskii with co-authors (Shidlovskiy, KM, BR Watters and RH Wildekamp. 2010. Notes on the annual fish species Nothobranchius rachovii (Cyprinodontiformes, Nothobranchiinae) with the description of the two new species Zootaxa 2724: 37-57 .) the text has been changed accordingly.

Come on. Can you do it? You can ask Max to give you access to edit the text. I just do not know the Espesniki well. And you can do on them in general a separate post. And in it to consider the problem of describing new species as a whole.

Well, yes, in principle, that's what I meant-to make a separate post on taxonomy (just a list) in the river. notobranchous. and we'll finish the specialists there. And a small decoding for each spetsu in my blog will do ...
