A. dayi werneri originally described by Meinken, H. 1966. Über eine neue Aplocheilus - Art aus Ceylon (Pisces, Cyprinodontidae) Aquarien und Terrarien 18 (3): 76 - 78
The description by Meinken was initially based only on females! Radda (1973) carried out the description of a male.
Differences to Apl. dayi dayi: the female is often a dark band across the anal fin to the caudal peduncle, the male has the tail fin of a sub-marginal and marginal red band of the five transverse bars on the body to go two over on the anal fin.
